Unlistd

Unlistd is a Montreal salon found on Saint Laurent which offers edgy and elevated styles. The owner started the salon in 2012, in hopes of creating an ideal working environment where new and unconventional styles could be approached. Unlistd has since expanded, becoming increasingly popular within their scene.

For this project, I wanted to build on their growth and create a full-service spa & salon with elements inspired by Vapourwave and Pop Art.

"Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music, a visual art style, and an Internet meme that emerged in the early 2010s. It is defined partly by its slowed-down, chopped and screwed samples of smooth jazz, elevator, R&B, and lounge music from the 1980s and 1990s. The surrounding subculture is sometimes associated with an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and pop culture, and tends to be characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist engagement with the popular entertainment, technology and advertising of previous decades. Visually, it incorporates early Internet imagery, late 1990s web design, glitch art, anime, 3D-rendered objects, and cyberpunk tropes in its cover artwork and music videos."

Unlistd

existing space - 2021

Unlistd is a fun and edgy salon located on boulevard Saint Laurent. It was started by a passionate individual in their apartment and has since then grown in success and established themselves in this new space with a full team of staff. The interior they had to work with is clad with plenty of warm earthen tones within the exposed brick walls and wood flooring. The studio has added a touch of colour and graphics to represent more of their personal style, though I feel this could be expressed more effectively. My goal is to transform this space into a partial art gallery while also integrating additional spa services to provide a complete and creative beautification process.

Materials

To best capture the smooth and glossy essence of Vaporwave, i felt it important to incorporate plenty of mansory that's rich with veining and inclusions and is highly polished.

Especially interesting tile to be used in relaxing areas. Turquoise tile provides an eye-catching floor for massage clients, and textured hexagon wall tiles are featured in the sauna area.

Chosen paint palette includes soft purples and blues to provide a universally soothing space which is gender neutral.

Highlights

Upon entering the spa & changeroom area, you are immediately welcomed by a mysterious entrance which is canopied with vertical suspended acoustic tiles. The entire spa area utilizes offset geometric shapes and changing saturated lights on glossy stone finishes. The rest area features a stepped ceiling with integrated cove lighting to create focal points of interest for spa clients while they lounge.
