COCKPIT

An airport feels like an appropriate place to start with Karim's passions, as his designs often include repeated lines. Just as in an airport you can find many examples of repeated lines: between the marking on the landing strips, the cues of people waiting, or the architectural beams that can be spotted throughout the space.

Most importantly, one large component of Karim's ethos is to attempt to make his designs as accessible as possible. With this in mind, I have worked to ensure the lounge itself is also accessible to those with physical mobility limitations.

This space is designed to serve aircraft pilots as well as any of the airports VIP members.

MATERIALS & FINISHES

In the open seating areas, I decided to go with the traditional commercial finishing material of carpet. As it absorbs sound and dirt and doesn't provide any risks when it comes to slipping. The carpet chosen is Econyl, which is made from 100% recycled fibers, making it a more environmentally responsible option. This pattern contains a repeating linear design, which I felt would be appropriate for this project. I chose Park, as this collection includes fun squares of colour to lighten up the mood.

This pink tile was chosen for it's bright contrast against the dark stained concrete interior wall of the conversation pit. This will make the space appear alluring from above and brighten up the space with it's ability to reflect some indirect light. Karim Rashid's favourite colour is pink, hence why it appears accented in this tile.

Taking into consideration that this bar will service many clients from around the world in a single day, it's vital to be able to properly disinfect the shared space in between each clients . The Corian can be molded in a curved manner and it's bright white colour gives it a very sharp clean appearance. Additionally, Karim Rashid has done projects with Corian in the past.

Seeing as how this area is going to be used by people of all varieties, backgrounds and needs. I wanted to make it organic in feel, neutral in colour, as well as safe & non-toxic for all. These pods are fully adjustable from their lighting to their temperature to provide the ideal environment for it's occupant.
